Initial Occupational Therapy assessment and evaluation

Work evaluations (FCE- Functional Capacity evaluations)
A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is a comprehensive, objective test of an individual's ability to perform work-related tasks. This evaluation is an integral part of the return-to-work process and is often requested by employers or insurance companies. The FCE helps determine the individual's capacity to safely resume work duties.
Cognitive rehabilitation
Interventions to improve memory, attention, problem-solving, and other cognitive functions.
Activities of Daily Living (ADL) Training (including adaptive equipment and assistive technology)
Helping individuals participate in and independently perform basic self-care tasks, such as grooming and dressing, by using or adapting tasks and assistive devices to improve their ability to take part in meaningful occupation.
Hand Therapy
Hand therapy involves assessing problems with hand function and retraining fine motor skills like gripping and coordination. It also focuses on increasing range of motion, building muscle strength, making splints, recommending assistive devices, and sensory re-education.
Neurological Rehabilitation
OT plays a crucial role in neurorehabilitation by helping individuals regain independence in basic activities of daily living (ADLs) such as grooming and dressing, instrumental ADLs like meal preparation and household tasks, and work-related activities. Therapists focus on improving physical abilities, cognitive skills, and adapting environments to support functional recovery and quality of life post-injury or illness.
Pre prosthetic training
Occupational therapy in amputee rehabilitation focuses on preparing individuals for prosthetic use through education on stump care, scar management, and phantom limb pain techniques. It aims to restore independence in daily living activities, including self-care and household tasks, using adaptations and assistive devices as needed. Therapists also provide balance training, upper limb strengthening, wheelchair management skills, and supportive counseling to promote recovery and family involvement in the rehabilitation process.
Home safety and modifications
Home assessments conducted by occupational therapists are crucial for recommending modifications that enable safe and independent participation in daily activities within the home environment. These assessments are vital for preventing falls and ensuring safety at home.
